This is a different question from whether you should stay in Ao Nang or Railay at all. If Railay has already won that decision, the next problem is how many nights justify the move. And if you have not yet chosen which side, settle Railay East vs West separately: side choice and stay length solve different kinds of friction.
Railay is physically close to Ao Nang but operationally different. Tourism Authority of Thailand material describes Railay as around a 20-minute boat trip from Ao Nang, while Bhu Nga Thani currently reminds guests that both Railay East and West are inaccessible by land and require a longtail-boat transfer. That small stretch of water is why one night can feel much shorter than “one night” sounds on a booking screen.
The overnight is the experience
You want a sunset, dinner, a quiet early morning and perhaps a few beach hours before leaving. You are not trying to fit a full climbing session, a major island tour and a difficult onward connection around the hotel change.
You want Railay to have a full middle day
You want one day with no arrival or departure admin attached to it. That is the night count that lets a climbing class, Phra Nang time, pool hours, a slow lunch or bad-weather delay happen without immediately consuming the whole stay.
The hidden issue is not nights. It is usable Railay hours.
A one-night booking can look like 24 hours and behave more like a narrow band between two transfers.
Current hotel policies show why. Railay Princess currently publishes check-in from 14:00. Sand Sea Resort currently states check-in from 14:00 and check-out by 11:00. Rayavadee currently publishes 15:00 check-in and 12:00 check-out for one of its current offers. These are examples rather than a universal Railay rule, but they illustrate the shape of the day: your room may not be available when you first arrive, and you may need to hand it back before the next day has really started.
Count door-to-door, not midnight-to-midnight
One-night Railay only works cleanly when both transfer edges are controlled. If you reach the peninsula around lunch, can leave your luggage with the hotel, keep the first afternoon flexible and depart after a useful morning, the overnight can be satisfying. If you arrive late after a flight or leave early for a ferry, airport or another hotel, the room key can become the least important part of the stay.
What one night actually looks like
That can be enough. In fact, it is a lovely shape for a traveler who wants one atmospheric overnight without giving Railay the largest share of a short Krabi trip. But it is not generous. The moment you add a fixed activity, a delayed boat, rain, wet clothes that need drying or a hotel transfer that does not line up neatly, the schedule starts eating itself.
Two nights fixes the problem by creating one day with no luggage in it
The second night is valuable less because you need another bed and more because it creates a full day in the middle.
That middle day is the only part of the stay that is not trying to become something else. You are not arriving from Ao Nam Mao or Ao Nang. You are not packing for Krabi Airport. You are not asking reception to store luggage while you keep checking the time. You wake up in Railay and go to bed in Railay.
This matters most if you want to do anything with a fixed start time. A half-day climbing class, for example, is much easier to place on the middle day than around a one-night arrival or departure. Even without booking that exact product, the duration illustrates the point: a “half-day” activity can occupy almost all of the useful daylight left after a one-night transfer.
If climbing is one reason you want the extra night
Check the current half-day Railay climbing format only after deciding that you actually want a fixed activity in the stay. A two-night Railay block gives a four-hour session somewhere sensible to live without forcing it into arrival or checkout day.

If most of your Krabi wish list is offshore, Railay may not need two hotel nights at all. A Hong Islands day or a Four Islands tour can take away the exact daylight hours you were paying to spend on the peninsula.
That does not make Railay a bad base. It just means the second night earns its value when the middle day belongs to Railay itself: beach time, climbing, slow resort time, Phra Nang, food, a spa appointment or a deliberate blank day. If the middle day immediately becomes another full-day boat circuit, staying on the mainland may create fewer transitions.
For an activity-heavy trip, compare the whole base choice again. Ao Nang Beach vs Nopparat Thara may solve more practical problems than adding another hotel move, especially when multiple operators can collect you by road.
One night becomes fragile when the next morning matters
The riskiest version of a one-night Railay stay is not arriving late. It is leaving with something important immediately afterwards.
Rayavadee's current non-resident transport information for The Grotto says public longtail access from Ao Nang Beach or Ao Nam Mao Pier operates within a published 06:00–21:00 window, requires minimum passenger numbers unless chartered and is subject to availability and weather. That is not a universal guaranteed timetable for every Railay transfer, but it is a useful reminder of how the system works: boats are not a metro line, and marine conditions remain part of the journey.
If the next step is a flight, a tightly timed ferry or a long road transfer, do not build the plan around the fastest possible crossing. Add margin for walking to the departure side, bags, waiting, boarding and road traffic after you reach the mainland.
If the final night of the Krabi trip is before a very early flight, the more useful comparison may be Krabi Town vs Ao Nang for the last night, not whether to squeeze one more Railay sunset into the itinerary.
One night is a poor choice after a late flight
If your Railay booking starts on the same day as an evening arrival at Krabi Airport, the transfer chain is doing too much work. You still have airport exit, the road leg, the pier and the boat. Even if every leg runs smoothly, you may reach the hotel after the part of Railay you wanted to experience has gone dark.

For solo women, the extra night buys simplicity more than romance
Railay is compact, but a one-night stay can still create a surprising amount of handling: bag off boat, bag to hotel, wet things into the room, repack the next morning, bag back to reception, bag to the boat. If you are doing all of that alone, two nights reduces the number of moments when you are simultaneously managing luggage, your phone, footwear and a transfer.
The same logic applies after dark. Staying over lets you enjoy dinner without making the boat back to the mainland part of the evening. But check the exact route between your hotel and where you expect to eat. East and West have different atmospheres, and some hotels stretch across the peninsula in ways that make a simple map pin misleading. Pack for boat handling rather than airport handling: one bag you can lift yourself, sandals or shoes that tolerate wet boarding, a waterproof pouch for your phone and passport, and a dry layer that is easy to reach. A dramatic suitcase is much less dramatic when you are trying to keep it out of shallow water.
Rain changes the answer in opposite directions
On a one-night stay, bad weather can erase a large percentage of the trip. Lose the main afternoon to heavy rain or a delayed crossing and you may be left with dinner plus checkout morning.
On a two-night stay, poor weather is easier to absorb because you still have another morning, afternoon and evening. But do not treat the second night as insurance against unsafe marine conditions. Operators and hotels can change transfer arrangements when conditions require it, and your onward travel should still have sensible margin.
If you are booking Railay mainly for the hotel rather than activities, this is also where room quality starts to matter more. A two-night stay means you may actually spend time in the room, pool or covered hotel spaces. If that is not appealing, stay-length is not the only problem; the hotel choice itself may be wrong.

Use the “middle-day test”
Three trip shapes, three clean answers
Three nights in Krabi, first visit, two island tours: do not force Railay into the plan just to say you stayed there. Keep the base simple and visit Railay as a day or evening trip unless the overnight itself is a priority.
Four or five nights in Krabi, couples trip, one island day: two Railay nights can work beautifully because the peninsula gets a real middle day instead of competing with every other highlight.
Longer southern Thailand trip, Railay is a stop between mainland bases: one night can be efficient if you arrive early and the following day's transfer is forgiving. Keep the stay intentionally small rather than trying to make it perform like a two-night break.
The final rule: do not move hotels for fewer than two usable Railay moments
A Railay hotel change should buy something you cannot get from a simple day trip. Usually that means at least two of these: sunset without thinking about the return boat, an early quiet morning, a full activity block, a slow resort afternoon, dinner with no mainland transfer afterwards, or a second weather window.
If one night gives you two of those and your transfer edges are easy, book one night confidently. If the stay only works when every boat, bag and check-in falls perfectly into place, two nights is the better decision.
And if even two nights feel difficult to justify, that is useful information too. Railay may be somewhere to visit rather than somewhere to sleep — which brings you back to the broader Ao Nang vs Railay choice.
