This is not another Ao Nang versus Railay argument. It assumes you have already decided to sleep on the road-connected mainland. The narrower question is whether you should stay in busy, flexible Ao Nang or move east toward Ao Nam Mao because Railay keeps appearing in your plans.
That distinction matters. Tourism Authority of Thailand still describes Ao Nang as Krabi's major launch point for boats to nearby islands and the isolated beaches around Phra Nang Cape. Ao Nam Mao, meanwhile, has a real operational advantage of its own: the pier directly serves Railay East, and current hotel and pier information confirms multiple transfer arrangements use that side of the peninsula.
Count Railay crossings before comparing hotels
The base choice gets easier when you count how often Railay is a destination rather than treating “near Railay” as a vague benefit.
Ao Nam Mao wins a specific journey, not the whole holiday
The strongest case for Ao Nam Mao is simple: it is a road-access base beside a pier that connects directly with Railay East. Ao Nam Mao Pier's current official site describes both a cement pier used by speedboats and a smaller floating pier used by longtail boats for private transfers between Railay and the Krabi mainland. Its current schedule page also lists scheduled speedboat departures to Railay East.
Railay hotels use the same geography in different ways. Railay Princess Resort & Spa currently publishes an airport-transfer arrangement that combines a private van with a joining longtail from Ao Nam Mao Pier, plus a separate private-longtail option. Its published joining-boat times are hotel-transfer arrangements rather than a universal public timetable, which is an important distinction.
If your Railay plans involve a climbing course, repeated East Railay meetings or a hotel transfer that explicitly uses Ao Nam Mao, the location can save repeated road transfers back across the Ao Nang side. That is a genuine advantage. It is just narrower than many hotel descriptions make it sound.
Ao Nang wins the hours when you are not on a boat
Most travelers spend more waking hours not going to Railay than going to Railay. That is where Ao Nang recovers the advantage.
TAT positions Ao Nang as a principal visitor and boat hub, and the existing Do Thailand decision guides show why the area keeps winning for first or short Krabi trips: restaurants, massage, shops, tour offices, weather-plan substitutes and boat access are concentrated into one usable visitor zone. If you already know you want Ao Nang, the next useful decision is whether to stay around central Ao Nang Beach or the Nopparat Thara side.
Ao Nam Mao can feel calmer, but that calm creates transport debt if your preferred evening is “walk out, choose dinner, change bars, get a massage, walk home.” A quieter road-side or beachfront hotel is only an upgrade if you actually want to stay there after sunset.
This is the same principle that separates Klong Muang from Ao Nang, only at a smaller scale. Do not buy quiet and then spend every evening paying to escape it.
When your plans change
A cancelled boat, sudden rain, tired legs or a last-minute dinner decision is easier when your base already has multiple walk-out options. The gain is not one dramatic transfer saving. It is the absence of dozens of small transport decisions.
When Railay East keeps repeating
If your confirmed activities or hotel transfers repeatedly use Ao Nam Mao Pier, the same geography can work in your favor more than once. The area becomes a specialist base rather than merely a quieter alternative.
Organised tours reduce the difference more than you might expect

If Hong Islands is the day you care about most, your more useful choice is longtail versus speedboat, not whether your hotel is five minutes closer to Ao Nam Mao Pier.

Ao Nam Mao is not one uniform strip. The right hotel can make the quieter-base strategy work; the wrong one can leave you dependent on rides for both Ao Nang and the pier.

The hotel's current official material places it on the Ao Nam Mao beachfront and explicitly describes the setting as secluded while noting access to Ao Nang, Shell Fossil Beach and Railay Bay. That is the trade-off in plain language: scenery and retreat value first, not dense walk-out nightlife.
The Tama Hotel
The hotel's current official page places it in Ao Nam Mao and advertises a shuttle connection to Railay Bay and Ao Nang Beach. That is a useful signal for this area: hotel-provided movement can materially change whether an Ao Nam Mao stay feels easy or isolated.
Neither hotel is presented here as “best.” They illustrate two different ways to make Ao Nam Mao work. Before booking, check the current shuttle timetable, final walk from the drop-off point, reception hours and whether the service still matches your travel dates.
Compare the hotel entrance, not only the beach name
For Ao Nam Mao, plot three things before paying: the pier route, your likely dinner route and how you will return after dark. A beautiful pin can still be inconvenient if every ordinary evening needs a car.
The late-evening test is stricter for solo travelers
If you are traveling alone, imagine the final 400 metres at 9:30 p.m., not the beach at 3 p.m. Ao Nam Mao has hotels where the road approach, lighting and nearby food options vary substantially. Do not infer walkability from a straight-line map distance.
Ao Nang is not automatically perfect either. Hillside hotels, side roads and properties marketed under the broad Ao Nang name can still create an unpleasant final walk. But central Ao Nang gives you more chances to choose a hotel where dinner, convenience shops and transport are concentrated around the route you already use.
For either base, save the hotel address offline, keep mobile data available for maps and ride coordination, and avoid making your first solo arrival the moment you discover that the lobby entrance is up a dark side road. Rain changes the value of “closer to the pier”
When sea conditions or an operator change your boat plan, the specialist advantage of Ao Nam Mao can disappear for the day. Ao Nang's value then rises because the area still gives you a larger set of non-boat choices without needing to reorganise the whole afternoon. If your Krabi stay is short and weather flexibility matters, that resilience is worth more than a theoretical pier advantage.

Do not split Ao Nang and Ao Nam Mao just to optimise transport
These bases are too close in function to justify a hotel move for most short trips. Packing, checkout, luggage storage and another check-in create more friction than you save. If you want a split stay, make it a meaningful contrast: mainland convenience plus Railay immersion, or Ao Nang energy plus a deliberately quieter resort area such as Tubkaek or Klong Muang.
The airport should not force this decision either. If your whole Krabi route is still unsettled, start with Krabi or Phuket Airport, then work inward to the base. A good hotel zone cannot rescue a badly planned final transfer.
The one-line booking rule
Stay in Ao Nang unless Ao Nam Mao solves a repeated, already-real logistics problem. “It looks closer to Railay” is not enough. Two or three confirmed Railay East crossings, a hotel transfer that uses Ao Nam Mao, or a deliberately quiet hotel-first stay are real reasons. One sightseeing day is not.
