This is not really a contest between two beaches. It is a choice between a cove you stay for and a beach town you use as a base.
Silver Beach can look irresistible when hotel photos put pale sand, clear water and granite rocks outside the room. Central Lamai can look less dramatic in a single frame. Yet at 7:30 p.m., after a boat day, wet hair, a shower and no dinner reservation, the balance can reverse very quickly.

Let your ordinary evening choose the hotel
Central Lamai: you can plausibly walk out for dinner, browse a market or shop, book a massage, change your mind and keep moving without turning each small decision into a vehicle request — provided your exact hotel really is in the central walkable zone.
Silver Beach: the most satisfying evening is often one where you are already content to stay on the cove, eat at or near the property, and let the day finish quietly. If you repeatedly want central Lamai after dark, treat those evenings as ride-out evenings from the start.
Silver Beach is a cove, not a second version of Lamai town
Current Crystal Bay material describes Silver Beach, Crystal Bay and Haad Thong Takian as names used for the same small east-coast cove between Chaweng and Lamai. Its current site places the Crystal Bay properties along roughly 250 metres of sand, with the beach set below the main ring road and reached by an access lane.
That geography matters more than the word Lamai in a postal address. A Silver Beach resort can give you excellent beach-at-the-door value without giving you a normal Lamai-town evening outside the door.
The upside is obvious: if your ideal Koh Samui morning is swim, breakfast, swim again, read, lunch, nap, then return to the same water before sunset, Silver Beach concentrates the thing you care about. The downside is equally simple: the cove is not trying to function like a full beach town.
The beach is the plan
You want long daylight blocks at one compact cove, do not need a different dinner district every night, and are comfortable using Grab, a taxi or arranged transport when you leave.
The area carries the trip
You want the hotel to sit inside an everyday network of food, shops, massages, markets and easy independent evenings between excursions.
The useful trade is beach quality versus decision freedom
Travelers often frame this as “Which beach is better?” That is too narrow for a hotel decision. You sleep at the location for three, four or five nights; you do not simply visit it at noon.
Silver Beach's advantage is concentrated in daylight. Central Lamai's advantage appears repeatedly in the small gaps around the day: before pickup, after returning from a tour, after dinner, when it rains, when you need a pharmacy, when one person wants a massage and the other wants coffee.
That makes Silver Beach especially strong for couples who genuinely want a beach-heavy stay. It also makes central Lamai unusually forgiving for solo travelers or friends with slightly different energy levels, because separating for an hour does not automatically require separate transport plans.

The current official site describes direct Silver Beach access, a pool, restaurant and beach bar serving from breakfast through dinner, massage/spa services and airport transfer on request. This is the logic of the cove stay: a property can cover many needs without you leaving.
Pavilion Samui Villas & Resort
Its current official location page places Lamai's Sunday Walking Street and local market about 100 metres away and describes the resort as beachfront in Lamai. That is the central-Lamai proposition: beach plus a functioning surrounding area.

Weekender currently describes itself as centrally located on Lamai Beach and only a few steps from the entertainment and centre area. Again, the important point is not the hotel name; it is the relationship between room, beach and town.

Suppose your four-night stay includes a full-day Koh Tao or Ang Thong trip and one land day around waterfalls or the island interior. You may spend two of your best daylight windows away from the hotel.
On that trip shape, paying mainly for Silver Beach's daytime setting makes less sense unless you protect the remaining beach blocks. Central Lamai keeps producing value after tour return because your evening options are still nearby.
Before letting pickup logistics decide the hotel, read whether hotel location really matters for Koh Samui day tours. Organised pickup can reduce the penalty of a less central hotel, but it does not solve the repeated dinner-and-evening question after the tour ends.

This is the part that can save a hotel decision.
If you love the look of Silver Beach but still want Lamai's evening flexibility, stay centrally and treat the cove as a deliberate beach session. Availability and wait time can still vary by exact location and time, so do not build a tight schedule around an assumed instant pickup.
That asymmetric choice matters. A central Lamai hotel can access Silver Beach for a beach block. A Silver Beach hotel cannot make central Lamai appear outside the door at dinner time.

Neither label tells you whether the last part of the route feels easy at night. The important check is the exact hotel entrance.

At Silver Beach, assume after-dark trips outside the cove may involve a ride rather than a pleasant walk toward Lamai. That is not a reason to avoid the area; it is simply a reason to price convenience in correctly. Do not let the airport decide this one
Samui Airport is on the northeast side of the island. Crystal Bay Beach Resort currently describes its airport transfer as roughly a 30-minute drive, while Pavilion's current location page also gives approximately 30 minutes by car from the airport. Traffic and exact transfer conditions can change those timings, but the useful conclusion is simple: airport access is too similar to be the main reason to choose between these two stay styles.
Samui Airport's current information also confirms taxi/transfer services and local public-transport options at arrivals. Four signs you are about to book the wrong side
You are choosing Silver Beach because of one perfect midday photo, but your saved map is mostly Lamai restaurants. Stay central and visit the cove.
You are choosing central Lamai because it feels “practical,” but your actual plan is two full resort days and one organised excursion. Silver Beach may fit the holiday better.
You expect to walk between Silver Beach and central Lamai at night. Rework the plan around rides instead of treating the coastal road like a promenade.
You are paying for a resort on Silver Beach but still expect to leave for breakfast, lunch and dinner most days. The hotel is not earning the location premium through your behavior.
The Do Thailand 2 + 2 rule
Silver Beach makes sense when you can name at least two substantial daylight blocks you will actually spend on the cove, and no more than about two evenings where you strongly want central Lamai.
Central Lamai makes sense when the town will carry three or more evenings, or when excursions consume enough daylight that the cove would mostly be scenery around breakfast.
This is an editorial planning rule, not a hotel-rate formula. The point is to compare how often you will use each location advantage before you pay for it.
Before you pay, check five things on the exact hotel pin
- Where is the pedestrian entrance? Do not rely only on the centre of the property polygon.
- Can you reach the beach from the hotel grounds? “Near Silver Beach” and “on Silver Beach” are different purchases.
- What is open for dinner on site? This matters much more at the cove if you do not want another ride.
- What does your 8 p.m. return look like? Inspect the road, lane, lighting and pickup point rather than assuming a short map distance equals a comfortable walk.
- How many daylight hours are you giving the hotel? If tours consume most of them, buy location flexibility before beach drama.
Final choice
Book central Lamai if you want Koh Samui to keep giving you options after the beach day ends. It is the more forgiving base for active short trips, solo stays, friends who split up occasionally and travelers who dislike arranging a ride for every small evening decision.
Book Silver Beach if you want the cove to be one of the reasons you booked Koh Samui in the first place. It works best when slow beach hours are protected in the plan and staying close to the property at night feels like relief rather than restriction.
Choose the version of 7:30 p.m. you want to repeat. Noon is the easy part.
