On the Donsak–Samui car-ferry corridor, Seatran Ferry uses Nathon on Samui, while Raja Ferry uses Lipa Noi. Both carry passengers and vehicles, and both currently publish a crossing of about 1 hour 30 minutes. The bigger difference for most hotel guests starts after the ramp comes down.
This is easy to miss when a booking site presents two similar-looking “Donsak to Koh Samui” results. Samui is large enough that the wrong arrival pier can add a second transport problem just when you thought the journey was finished.

Donsak → Nathon
Seatran’s current official route page lists Donsak–Koh Samui service at about 1 hour 30 minutes and identifies its Samui office and ferry pier in Nathon, Ang Thong. The company currently carries both ordinary passengers and vehicles.
Think of Nathon as the better default when your final hotel is north, north-east or central-east and the two ferry options otherwise fit equally well.
Donsak → Lipa Noi
Raja Ferry’s current official schedule places its Donsak–Koh Samui service at Lipa Noi Pier, with regular departures through the day. Raja also describes the service as a passenger-and-car ferry operation.
Think of Lipa Noi as the stronger default for Lipa Noi itself, Taling Ngam and other south-west stays.
Do not compare the ferries until you pin the hotel
Open your hotel confirmation and look at the exact map pin. Do not stop at “Koh Samui”. Then use the pier as the first island transport decision.
You still have a substantial cross-island road leg, but Nathon normally avoids dropping you farther down the south-west coast first. If your trip is airport-heavy rather than ferry-heavy, compare the logic with the Samui Airport to Chaweng or Bophut guide.

This is where Raja Ferry’s arrival point becomes a genuine transport advantage rather than a minor map detail. You remove an unnecessary island transfer before the hotel stay has even started.
For Lamai, the useful choice can depend more on the exact hotel pin, traffic, onward transfer and the ferry or through-ticket that fits your mainland arrival. If your stay is still undecided, use Chaweng vs Lamai before optimising the ferry.
The rule is intentionally simple: if one pier removes a meaningful section of the last road leg, take the advantage. If the difference is marginal, choose the stronger overall booking.
Three things can overrule the “nearest pier” rule
If your bus or van from Surat Thani Airport, Surat Thani town or another mainland gateway is sold as one coordinated journey, the protected handoff can be worth more than saving a small amount of driving on Samui.
Bringing a car or large motorbike changes the booking logic. Vehicle space, reservation conditions and check-in rules matter more than they do for a foot passenger.
A ferry that lands after dark should be judged by what happens on the pier side: confirmed pickup, luggage handling and whether your driver knows the exact terminal.
The through-ticket is often the least glamorous and smartest choice
Raja Ferry currently publishes a combined Surat Thani Airport → Koh Samui journey that terminates at Lipa Noi. Seatran’s current site also advertises coach connections from Surat Thani and Nakhon Si Thammarat airports/city areas into its ferry network.
If one of those through journeys lines up cleanly with your arrival, do not automatically break it apart just to chase the theoretically closer Samui pier. A coordinated bus–ferry chain removes a ticket boundary, a terminal question and one chance to miss the next leg.

If you are bringing a car, pier choice becomes a booking-rule decision
Both Seatran and Raja carry vehicles on the Donsak–Samui route. Current official pages from both operators list car and motorcycle categories, so this is not a passenger-ferry-versus-car-ferry comparison.
Seatran currently publishes an additional restriction for 100% electric cars: EV vehicle service is limited to specified days and requires advance reservation on the listed Samui service. That is exactly the kind of rule that should override a hotel-geography preference. A pier that looks better on the map is irrelevant if your vehicle is not accepted on the sailing you intended to use.
For a conventional rental car, book the vehicle space rather than assuming a passenger ticket reserves it. If you are renting only after you reach Samui, this issue disappears and you can return to the hotel-base rule.
Nathon and Lipa Noi do not feel the same after dark
Nathon is a town as well as a ferry arrival point. Thailand tourism material continues to highlight its night food market near the pier. Lipa Noi, by contrast, is promoted as a quieter west-coast beach area.
That difference matters if you are arriving alone with a suitcase at the end of a long mainland day. It does not make Lipa Noi unsafe, and it is not a reason to avoid the pier. It simply means I would be more deliberate about the final pickup there: have the hotel, transfer company or driver name and meeting point settled before the boat docks.
If your hotel road is isolated, do not plan to “sort out a ride when I get there” simply because the ferry itself is frequent. A confirmed car waiting at the correct pier is worth more than a theoretically shorter drive.
What about Grab, taxis and local transport from the pier?
Treat ride-hailing as a useful option, not the foundation of a tight evening handoff. Availability can vary by place and time, and a ferry unloading a full passenger deck creates a predictable demand spike.
For a daytime arrival with a flexible hotel check-in, you have more room to improvise. For a late arrival, heavy suitcase or hotel on a smaller road, pre-arranging the transfer is the lower-friction choice. Current operating reality: the two crossings are more similar than the map makes them look
Checked on 10 August 2026, Seatran’s official route information lists a 1 hour 30 minute Donsak–Samui crossing and service through the day. Raja’s current sailing schedule likewise shows regular Donsak–Samui departures from early morning into the evening, with a 1 hour 30 minute scheduled crossing.
That is why this article does not name a permanent “best ferry”. Schedules, vehicle space and operational notices can change. The durable decision is to compare the live sailing you can actually take with the island-side transfer it creates.
Use this order when you book
- Pin the exact Samui hotel.
- Check whether Nathon or Lipa Noi gives the cleaner last road leg.
- Compare the live ferry times you can genuinely reach at Donsak.
- If you have a through-ticket or a vehicle, check those rules before optimising the pier.
- For an evening arrival, arrange the final pickup before boarding.
For most foot passengers, that five-step order is enough. Nathon is not automatically “the main pier” for every trip, and Lipa Noi is not automatically inconvenient because it sits farther south. The correct pier is the one that leaves you with the least awkward journey after the ferry.
The short version
Take Seatran to Nathon when your north, north-east or central-east hotel benefits from the cleaner final road leg and the live sailing fits your mainland arrival. Take Raja to Lipa Noi when your stay is on the west or south-west coast, especially Lipa Noi or Taling Ngam. For Lamai or a through-ticket from Surat Thani, compare the complete chain rather than the pier name alone.
