The Bangkok airport question is often framed as “train is cheap, taxi is easy.” That is too blunt to be useful. The better question is where does each option stop being simple? Airport Rail Link gets you off the road quickly, but Sukhumvit is not one station and the train does not deliver you to hotel reception. A direct car costs more, but it can remove every handoff after baggage claim.
If you are still choosing between Bangkok airports rather than transport from one of them, start with BKK vs DMK. This guide assumes you are already landing at Suvarnabhumi Airport.
Your hotel pin matches the network
You are near Asok/Sukhumvit MRT, Nana, Phrom Phong or another station where one sensible ARL handoff finishes the trip without a long walk.
The final 800 metres are the real problem
A deep-soi hotel, two large cases, a late curb time, rain or a tired arrival can turn “one train transfer” into several annoying pieces.
First choose the correct rail handoff, not just “Airport Rail Link”
Suvarnabhumi Airport currently lists Airport Rail Link from the terminal's B1 level, operating daily from 05:30 to 24:00. Thailand's government transport guidance lists eight ARL stations from Suvarnabhumi through Makkasan to Phaya Thai. That gives Sukhumvit travelers two useful city handoffs rather than one universal route.
ARL to Makkasan, then connect to MRT at Phetchaburi (BL21) and continue to Sukhumvit (BL22). BEM currently identifies Phetchaburi Exit 1 as the connection for Makkasan Airport Rail Link.
ARL to Phaya Thai, then BTS eastbound. This is usually cleaner than forcing the Makkasan–MRT route only to change again.

The hotel pin decides whether rail is elegant or annoying
Rail is strongest when the station exit and hotel entrance belong to the same small walkable zone. It is weaker when the hotel marketing says “near BTS” but the property is well down a side street. Our near BTS vs deep-soi hotel guide matters here more than a generic Bangkok map.
For a first trip, this is also why Sukhumvit vs Siam is partly a transport decision. Sukhumvit gives you many hotel choices, but the difference between a station-side property and one that needs a shuttle every time you go out can be more important than the district name.
Airport Rail Link now removes one small arrival hassle
The Department of Rail Transport and Asia Era One introduced EMV contactless payment across all Airport Rail Link stations from 8 November 2025. Travelers can tap a compatible contactless credit or debit card at the gate, alongside the existing ticket options. That does not remove the city transfer at Makkasan or Phaya Thai, but it makes the first rail step less fiddly after a long flight.
Government guidance describes the ARL run between Suvarnabhumi and Phaya Thai as roughly a 30-minute end-to-end rail journey. Do not turn that into a promise that you will reach a Sukhumvit hotel in 30 minutes. You still need to walk from arrivals to B1, wait for the train, make the city transfer, ride BTS or MRT, then reach the hotel entrance.

Late flights should be judged by curb time, not touchdown
ARL currently runs until midnight, but an aircraft landing before midnight does not mean you can use the train. International immigration, a delayed baggage belt and the walk through the terminal all happen before you reach the B1 station.
If the margin looks thin, use a direct car rather than building the first night around catching the final rail service. This is the same principle we use for late Chiang Mai airport arrivals: transport closes according to a timetable; baggage claim does not.
For a very late BKK arrival, Suvarnabhumi Airport currently lists both its public taxi service and Grab as 24-hour options. Public taxis use the Level 1 area between Gates 4 and 7 on the inner curb, with a queue-ticket system. Grab currently has an official airport pickup point at Level 1, Gate 4, outer curb. Knowing the official pickup level is more useful than following a driver message blindly while tired.
Taxi and Grab solve different small problems
A metered airport taxi is still a straightforward default. Airports of Thailand currently states that regular taxis operate 24 hours, use the official Level 1 queue system, and add a 50-baht airport surcharge to the metered fare; baggage fees can also apply under Ministry of Transport rules. Road tolls and traffic conditions can affect the final trip cost and time, so comparing a single fixed number against rail is not very meaningful.
Grab is useful when you want the destination pin and vehicle details inside an app, especially for a hotel whose English name or entrance is easy to miscommunicate. But do not stand at whichever curb feels convenient: AOT now designates the Grab pickup at Level 1 Gate 4 outer curb.
For women arriving alone, the practical win is not that an app or taxi makes all risk disappear. It is that you can choose the official pickup channel, keep the exact hotel pin on screen, and avoid walking with luggage along Sukhumvit after dark just to preserve a rail plan that no longer suits the arrival.
Asok is the strongest case for rail — if the hotel is truly central
Asok sits at the intersection of BTS Asok and MRT Sukhumvit. BEM's current Sukhumvit station information identifies Exit 3 for Asok BTS, Terminal 21 and several nearby hotels. That makes a central Asok property unusually well placed for an Airport Rail Link journey via Makkasan and Phetchaburi.
The conclusion changes quickly once the hotel moves deeper into the neighbourhood. A boutique hotel 12 minutes down a narrow soi may still be marketed as “Asok,” but after ARL + MRT you are now choosing between a hot walk with bags and yet another car. If airport arrival simplicity is a priority, read Asok vs Phrom Phong with the exact station exit in mind rather than comparing the neighbourhoods only by restaurants and malls.
Phaya Thai is useful even when you are not staying there
Phaya Thai is the ARL terminus and connects into the BTS Sukhumvit Line. That makes it the logical handoff for Nana, Phloen Chit, Phrom Phong and Thong Lo when you want to stay on rail after leaving the airport.
It is also why some travelers deliberately choose a Phaya Thai hotel for a short Bangkok stay. When paying for a private transfer is actually rational
A prebooked private transfer is not necessary just because it is your first time in Bangkok. Public rail and official airport taxis are well-established. It becomes rational when it removes a specific failure point: a late arrival, several large bags, a child or older traveler who will struggle with transfers, a deep-soi hotel, or a group that would otherwise split across multiple rail tickets and luggage handoffs.

Taking a taxi from BKK does not mean taxis are the right answer all week. Once your luggage is in the room, BTS and MRT become far easier to use. Likewise, choosing Airport Rail Link on arrival does not mean you should force rail onto every early departure.

One suitcase + station-side hotel + comfortable ARL operating margin: take Airport Rail Link and make the correct Makkasan or Phaya Thai transfer.
Late curb time + heavy bags + deep-soi hotel + several travelers: use the official taxi/Grab system or a prebooked car and finish the journey at reception.
