Khao Kheow Open Zoo from Pattaya: the ticket is cheap — the transfer is the real cost

I would go to Khao Kheow Open Zoo if wildlife is one of the reasons you are spending time in Chonburi. I would not add it as a casual two-hour Pattaya stop. The current foreign-adult gate price is only 350 baht, but the zoo sits roughly 45–50 km from central Pattaya and is large enough that transport inside matters too. The decision is really whether you want to give a substantial part of the day to the zoo, not whether the admission ticket looks inexpensive.

Worth it as a deliberate wildlife half-day or longer. Not worth it if you are trying to squeeze it between Pattaya city attractions.

Road-distance planners currently put the zoo at about 45–48 km from Pattaya, with a direct drive around 35–40 minutes before traffic and pickup friction. Public-transport combinations exist on paper, but a direct car, pre-arranged driver or tour is the practical choice for most visitors. Once you arrive, the zoo’s own map divides areas by how vehicles may move, so the day still needs an internal transport plan.

The 350-baht ticket is not the real cost of this day

Khao Kheow Open Zoo’s current official foreign-visitor admission is 350 baht for adults and 120 baht for children. The official English page also lists daily opening hours of 08:00–17:00, and says the admission price includes the free shows.

That sounds inexpensive until you add the journey from Pattaya and the way you want to move around the zoo. The official Thai price page currently lists vehicle-entry fees of 40 baht for a motorcycle, 80 baht for a car and 100 baht for a bus. If you are not driving your own vehicle, the zoo also publishes tram and golf-cart options.

The lesson is simple: do not compare Khao Kheow with a 350-baht Pattaya attraction by ticket price alone. A city attraction may be walkable or a short Grab ride away. Khao Kheow asks you to solve an out-and-back road journey and then decide how much walking you want to do inside.

From central Pattaya, a direct car is the cleanest answer

Current route planners put the road distance from Pattaya at roughly 48 km, with a direct drive around 39 minutes in ideal conditions. Pattaya Bus Terminal is slightly closer by road. In real travel planning, I would budget more than the pure driving time because hotel pickup, traffic, finding the correct drop-off point and arranging the return all add friction.

There are bus-plus-taxi combinations via the Laem Chabang side, but I would not recommend building a leisure day around them unless saving money is the main objective and you are comfortable with local transfers. You lose the simplicity that makes the zoo workable from Pattaya in the first place.

Solve the return before you enter.

Khao Kheow is in Bang Phra, Si Racha rather than central Pattaya. If you are relying on ride-hailing, check that you can request the return from the zoo and keep enough phone battery and data for pickup. A pre-arranged round trip costs more, but it removes the most annoying uncertainty at the end of a hot walking day.

This matters even more for a solo traveller. I would rather know the return plan than save a small amount on the outbound ride and spend the afternoon wondering how long a driver will take to reach the entrance.

Inside the zoo, the tram is cheap; the golf cart buys control

The official zoo currently lists its sightseeing tram at 35 baht for adults and 25 baht for children up to 135 cm. That is the obvious budget choice if you are happy to move with the zoo’s transport rhythm.

The golf-cart service is more expensive but much more flexible. The official English service page currently lists 500 baht for the first two hours for a four-seat cart and 700 baht for two hours for a six-seat cart. The Thai service page also lists a 50-baht accident-insurance charge. Recheck the exact rental conditions before you hand over payment.

For two adults, I would not automatically pay for a cart if the tram covers the sections you want. For four people, the maths changes quickly: the ability to stop when you want, carry bags and avoid waiting can be worth the premium.

The zoo’s own map adds another reason to plan. It currently states that private cars are not allowed in the Green Zone; visitors there may walk, use the zoo tram or rent a golf cart. Private cars are allowed in the Pink Zone. So even arriving in your own car does not mean you can drive door to door everywhere.

How long should you actually allow?

Klook currently suggests three to five hours, which is a useful minimum range for the attraction itself. From Pattaya, I would treat the outing as at least a substantial half-day once you include the road journey in both directions.

If you want to follow several show times, stop for food, use the African Savanna area and move at a comfortable pace, four or five hours inside is easier than trying to force the zoo into two. The mistake is arriving at noon because “it closes at five” and then discovering that the sections you care about are spread out.

I would leave Pattaya in the morning, arrive while the day is still relatively cool, prioritise the animals or zones you actually care about, eat before you are exhausted and start the return before late-afternoon traffic becomes the final memory of the trip.

The show schedule can organise your route — but do not build the whole day around it

The official zoo site currently lists multiple daily programs. On weekdays, the current schedule includes a penguin parade at 10:00 and 14:00, a flying parade at 10:30 and 14:30, and elephant shows at 11:00 and 14:30. Weekend and public-holiday schedules add some extra rounds.

The zoo explicitly says show times may change. I would use the schedule as an orientation tool, not a promise. Choose one or two timed programs that genuinely interest you, then let the rest of the route be driven by distance and heat rather than racing across the park for every performance.

If your main interest is the African Savanna, the zoo’s official information lists giraffes, zebras, ostriches, rhinoceros and several antelope species in that section. Make that a priority and treat the rest as optional. A large attraction is more enjoyable when you stop trying to “complete” it.

Is the zoo a good choice in Pattaya heat?

It can be, but this is still an outdoor attraction. The cart or tram reduces walking; it does not remove sun, humidity or waiting. If you are visiting in a hot period, the morning start matters more than squeezing another paid stop into the evening.

Wear shoes you can walk in, carry water according to current venue rules, and do not underestimate how tiring it becomes to move between zones while holding a handbag, camera and shopping. If you are travelling with children, the internal-transport decision becomes even more important.

Rain changes the calculus too. A short shower is manageable; a day of heavy rain weakens the point of a sprawling open zoo. Check the weather before you lock in a non-flexible driver arrangement.

Is Khao Kheow Open Zoo good for a solo female traveller?

The zoo itself is a structured daytime attraction. The practical issue for a solo woman is the rural return journey, not whether she can walk around the zoo alone. I would save the exact hotel pin, screenshot the zoo entrance in case data becomes patchy, and keep enough battery for the ride back.

I would also be more willing to pay for a round-trip driver when travelling alone than when splitting a car with three friends. The premium is buying certainty at the end of the day. If you prefer to use ride-hailing, check availability before you dismiss the outbound driver.

Clothing is mainly about heat and walking rather than dress code. Lightweight clothes, secure footwear and a small bag are more useful here than an outfit chosen for photographs. If you are carrying a larger tote, the golf cart becomes a comfort purchase rather than a luxury.

What if animal-interaction activities make you uncomfortable?

This is a fair reason to pause before booking. The zoo publishes feeding areas and scheduled animal programs, and third-party listings may highlight different encounters. Travellers have different boundaries around zoos and animal interactions.

I would not tell you that a ticket is automatically right simply because the zoo is popular. Review the current program, decide which activities you are comfortable with, and skip any interaction that does not fit your standards. You can still make a decision based on the exhibits and zones you actually want to see.

Khao Kheow vs Pattaya’s easier paid attractions

ChoiceUse it whenMain trade-off
Khao Kheow Open ZooWildlife is a major priority and you can give the outing half a day or more.Longer transfer and more internal movement.
Nong Nooch Tropical GardenYou want landscaped gardens and a major south-Pattaya attraction.Still outside the centre, but easier to combine with other south-side stops.
Pattaya Floating MarketYou want food, browsing and an easy two-hour visitor attraction.Less destination-defining and much less of a wildlife day.
Columbia Pictures AquaverseYou want a deliberate water-park day.Higher activity cost, but the purpose of the day is clearer.

If you only have one night in Pattaya, I would not automatically spend half the visit in Si Racha. Our Pattaya one-night vs two-night guide is the better first decision. Khao Kheow becomes easier to justify when your trip is long enough that one substantial off-centre attraction does not crowd out the city itself.

Should you book the zoo ticket online?

Yes if the dated online price or cancellation terms suit your trip, but check what is actually included. The exact Klook non-Thai-resident ticket currently includes admission and excludes transport. KKday also has an exact English Khao Kheow Open Zoo admission product.

Do not assume an “open zoo” ticket includes a Pattaya hotel transfer or a private cart. Those are separate decisions unless your selected package states otherwise.

Compare the exact admission ticket before you solve transport

Klook product 338 and KKday product 5439 are exact English Khao Kheow Open Zoo admission products. GetYourGuide returned no exact connected product during this fact check, so I would not add a different Pattaya tour merely to create a third merchant button.

My final decision rule

Choose Khao Kheow Open Zoo when animals are one of the main reasons you want a Chonburi day and you are willing to spend for a clean transfer.

Skip it when you are collecting Pattaya attractions by quantity. The 350-baht gate price makes the zoo look like an easy add-on, but the real commitment is the return drive, the internal transport and several hours outdoors. If that sounds like the day you want, it can be a strong choice. If not, keep the day in Pattaya and choose an attraction that does not create a second transport project.

Before paying, verify four things: the zoo’s live opening hours, the current foreign-visitor ticket rules, the show schedule if a specific program matters to you, and your return transport. Those four checks determine whether the inexpensive ticket becomes an easy day or an unnecessarily complicated one.

Fact check: 22 August 2026. Official Khao Kheow Open Zoo pages were checked for foreign-visitor admission, opening hours, vehicle fees, tram fares, golf-cart prices, internal vehicle restrictions and current show times. Current route information was checked for the Pattaya road distance and direct-drive time. Exact English Klook and KKday products were checked separately; GetYourGuide returned no exact connected result. Recheck live rates, show times, weather and transport before payment.
