The real difference is access, not a “hidden gem” label
Koh Samui Municipality describes Na Muang 1 as the more popular of the two Na Muang falls because access is easier and a paved road reaches the waterfall area. The page also notes a sizeable pool and visitor facilities around the parking area. That makes Na Muang 1 easy to understand as a discrete stop: arrive, check conditions, see the waterfall, swim if appropriate, then move on.
Hin Lad is structured differently. The municipality says the lower area has pools, but to get the fuller Hin Lad waterfall atmosphere you continue roughly 2 km to the upper section, where there are additional pools and sloping rock areas. It also says official wayfinding is limited because the approach crosses privately owned orchard land, and recommends having a guide for convenience and safety.
That is why the useful question is not “which waterfall is prettier?” It is whether you want the approach itself to consume part of the experience.
Na Muang 1
Choose it when the waterfall is one strong chapter in the day rather than the day’s main project.
Hin Lad
Choose it when a longer forest approach sounds appealing even before you know exactly how dramatic the water will look that day.
West vs south
Hin Lad sits on the Nathon–Lipa Noi side; Na Muang sits farther south. Your base and next stop can settle the tie better than a generic ranking.
Let the rest of the day break the tie
If you are based around Chaweng, Lamai or the south-east and already plan a south-island sightseeing route, Na Muang often fits naturally. If you are spending meaningful time around Nathon or the west coast, Hin Lad can make more geographic sense. Neither statement is a fixed drive-time promise; Samui traffic, your exact hotel and the next stop all matter.

Hin Lad comes with a walk contract
Before choosing Hin Lad, ask one blunt question: would I still be happy if the forest walk were the best part of the outing?
If yes, Hin Lad makes sense. A longer approach, less obvious wayfinding and a quieter inland feel are not flaws when those are exactly what you want. If no, Na Muang 1 is the cleaner choice. You are not choosing a lesser waterfall; you are choosing lower logistical overhead.
Wear secure footwear for Hin Lad. Carry water, keep your phone charged and avoid using a lunch or sunset deadline to turn the return walk into a rush.
Swimming is a same-day decision
Both municipal pages describe pools where swimming is possible. That does not guarantee swimming is sensible when you arrive. Water level, runoff, recent rain, slippery rock and local restrictions can change the risk quickly.
At Na Muang, the municipality specifically warns visitors to be careful around rocks in the pool. At Hin Lad, the longer route means you also need to think about walking back after getting wet. Do not choose a waterfall because an old photo makes the water look calm; use the actual conditions in front of you.

Three good reasons to change the plan
- The rock feels slick before the route gets interesting. The return matters more than reaching a specific pool.
- Flow or rain looks materially stronger than expected. Same-day conditions outrank the itinerary you saved weeks ago.
- You are starting Hin Lad late. Koh Samui Municipality currently lists 07:00–18:00, but local access can change. Do not use a published closing time as permission to begin a longer walk with no buffer.
For solo women, choose the cleaner exit if the experience is otherwise tied
Na Muang 1
The clearer road access and visitor facilities make it easier to bound the stop. Keep dry clothes, phone battery and return transport independent of whether you decide to swim.
Hin Lad
The municipality’s limited-signage note matters. Do not treat the upper walk as an improvised solo wander if the route or conditions feel unclear. Use local guidance or stay with the lower area.
Thailand’s Tourist Police hotline is 1155. Save it before you need it. More broadly, tell someone where you are going if you are heading into a quieter inland route alone, and avoid turning dusk into a navigation problem.
If you want a handled driving day, compare private driver vs taxis. Transport certainty can be useful when your day includes a walk, wet clothes and an uncertain finish time.
Use your itinerary as a decision matrix

What I would do on a four-day first trip
If the trip already has one substantial offshore day, one proper beach/resort day and one general sightseeing day, I would normally place Na Muang 1 inside the sightseeing day rather than create a second dedicated inland mission. That preserves a flexible day, which is the logic behind our four-day Samui resort-day decision.
I would switch to Hin Lad when the traveller says something more specific: “I actually want a forest walk; I am staying west; I do not need to collect every major sight; and I am happy if this becomes the main activity.” That is a real reason. “It looks more hidden online” is not.
If you are tired after an offshore day, do not automatically turn the next morning into a longer inland walk. Use the after-boat-day stay-local vs go-out decision first.
Final call: Na Muang 1 for the waterfall; Hin Lad for the walk
Choose Na Muang 1 if your sentence is “I want to see one Koh Samui waterfall.” Its easier access makes it the stronger first-trip default.
Choose Hin Lad if your sentence is “I want a forest walk that ends in waterfall pools, and I am comfortable giving it more time and route attention.”
